It was all going soooo well…..then this
happened. Okay. I’m being a bit too dramatic. It wasn’t that bad but
like it had a hockey player x ballerina as the MC’s. It would have been so much
better if someone just made me the damn beta reader but nooooo. Huh. Not my
loss.
Anyways!
Sloane Winthrop and Jasper Gervais. First and
foremost, Beau went missing! Why was I more bothered about Bea than the actual
MC’s at hand? That was problem number one. Just a big fat waving red flag for
the whole novel. I understand it was the pre-face for the last installment but
it kind of just stole my attention. Second of all, it was just dragging out
scenes that didn’t need to be dragged out. I have a strong suspicion that
whoever was the alpha, beta, editorial, readers in general of this book were
different to the remaining ones. There is no one someone read this and thought,
‘hmmm yeah quality is just spot on’. It was progressing so nicely, until
this. So, did I mention I’m a bit dramatic? If not then hi. My name is Vivan
DRAMATIC blogger. It wasn’t horribly bad but I took an alarming number of
breaks during read it (not normal) and it took me 64% of reading it to then get
into it. Tell me what this means? Okay. Thanks.
It went form ‘oh my god this is going to be so
good’ to ‘It was going so well’ to finally ‘thank god Beau came
back and added levity to it’. Eeek. Writing whilst nibbling my nails and hiding
behind my fingers.
Childhood crush. Sloane Winthrop is all upper east
side, city girl, elegant ballerina who’s had a crush on Jasper Gervis since she
literally laid eyes on him. Circumstances all popped up and whilst Jasper was
aware – thanks to someone making it painfully aware how much she stared at him
– of the crush, no one thought of it much more than childhood butterflies. We
see in Heartless, that Violet (cousin) announces the engagement of Sloane
to Sterling aka rich, polo-wearing, silver spoon-fed little douche. All a deal
made between the fathers. Well, when there’s a video sent anonymously to Sloane
on the wedding day, she flees with the help of Jasper Gervais and that’s how
that starts.
Somewhere along the line everyone stopped teasing Sloane
about her crush because it turned from funny to hurtful. It seemed like it took
Jasper the engagement to break him but it wasn’t that. It was something else
but I’m not going to tell you. Ha ha.
Jasper stays under his cap, goalie of hockey team,
quiet, mysterious and everything he’s always been. Sloane’s got some bite to
her under all that ballerina façade. Let’s talk about what I disliked first
because I refuse to end on a bad note. First of all, when they went on that
road trip together, stopped at different places and spoke. Some chapters were
never ending and unnecessary. It kind of felt like there was just a bunch of
fillers so that the book makes it over 300 pages. I know. It sounds harsh but I
failed to really get into the book throughout the middle. It started with a
high but then plateaued throughout the middle when it should have piqued my attention
the most. After they finally reached to Gold Rush Ranch is when it started to
actually get inviting again.
In all honesty, I did not see Sloane’s dad as
the one who would threaten Jasper to stay away from his daughter. That little…thing.
Yes. Robert Winthrop is an idiot who threatened Jasper thus ending the love
story before it started. A loved one and that to a family member betraying you?
I’m familiar with that feeling so I felt the pain. Sloane finally took things
into her own hands and made sure to set both Sterling and Robert straight. Away
from her life with Jasper, her life in Chesnut Springs and her life period. The
altercation happened where it all started for the ballerina x hockey player. A
full circle, nostalgic feeling.
Unexpected but still expected was Cordelia x Harvey romance.
I saw it coming because I read in the wrong order (spoilers in Reckless) but
still found it comforting in its oddity. I just think about me marrying my brother-in-law.
Never going to happen. Love ya but not that much. Every little moment
amounts to how much I sobbed over the book with the nights on the roof-tops
taking the lead. It reminded me off the roof-top meeting between Ryle and Lily
but you know, Jasper actually knows how to RESPECT women. Shade no shade.
I’ve wanted and still want nothing more than to leave
England and re-locate to another country (New York) where no one know who I am,
what I do or why I do things the way I do. I found solace in Sloane moving to
the house she fixed up with Jasper. Moving away from a life she didn’t want. Having
control over her career. Only if it was that easy. Alas, one day I’ll look back
at this blog, remembering the hard work I put into it to reach my end goal.
I want to be Sloane when I grow up.
When Harvey gave land to Jasper? The story of how he
became one of them? The bond shared by Jasper and Beau? I may or may not have
shed some tears. Or enough to wet a page but who’s counting. It was intriguing from
the books prior read leading up to Powerless.
So, my final thoughts are this. The potential is there
however it was lacking ever so slightly. It could have been elevated from good
to great with a couple of different adjustments. Nevertheless, Jasper has stolen
my stupid little heart. Whilst I won’t be re-reading it again, It still crucial
within the series.
Right. Hopeless is finished on my end, the
review is almost done for that to. I’m always sad when I finish I series I
really e joyed so it’s bitter sweet. Maybe I’ll read the Gold Rush Ranch series
to get familiarized with Violet a bit more.
I want a Beau, Cade, Rhett, Theo and Jasper all in
one.
Sigh.
On the bright side, I have so many pre-ordered releases
waiting to be delivered this month. Most exited about Tessa Bailey’s Fangirl
Down and H.D. Carlton’s Where’s Molly? Overstimulated for sure.
Whilst I’m going to discover some more paper – or digital
– pages, I encourage you to do the same.
Mwah.
Vivian.
Don’t forget to keep reading, because as long as you
do, it’s making a struggling authors day that much better. Reach for the starts
of success.
